Roland Tiensuu, 12, (Sweden) thinks that saving our planet is tooimportant to be left to grown-ups. Three years ago, the boy learned fromhis teacher, Eha Kern (who shares the prize of $60,000 with Tiensuu)that large areas of rainforests in Latin America had been destroyed.Tiensuu was worried that by the time he and his classmatesgrew up, there would be no rain-forests left to save. “I thought,there must be something we cando,” he says. “I saw a televisionprogramme where people planted trees to replacesome of those that had been cut down. But of course,we couldn’t do that because we lived far awayin Sweden. Then I thought we could buy the rainforestinstead.”

With the teacher’s help Tiensuu and the rest ofthe class organised a bake sale in their small villageof Fagervik and raised enough money to buy fourhectares of rain forest in Costa Rica. Their school cam-paign started the Children’s Rain Forest, a nonprofit(некоммерческая / некаммерщыйная) organisationwhose young members in several thousand Swedishschools have bought 7,000 hectares of jungle withthe $1.5 million they have raised so far. Schoolchildrenin Germany, Japan and the US have followed theirexample. The people of Costa Rica have named partof the rainforest the Bosque Eterno de los Ninos, orThe Children’s Eternal (вечный / вечны) Forest.
