1. a. Do you like doing projects at school? Why (not)? What was your favourite project? What did you do? What skills does project work develop?

Dear Belarusian friends,

My name is Alan Johns. I found your school web-site on the Internet and was extremely pleased, as it hasn't been very easy to find one. We are currently working on a big project “Life in European Countries”. I've chosen Belarus. I am curious to know as much about your country as possible. I found a lot of information on the Internet, but first-hand experience is invaluable. It would be great if you could help me.

I am 16 and I study at the 6^th form college in Guildford, Surrey, England. Before that, I studied at a comprehensive school. I finished school and passed the GCSE exams. So, it's my first year at the college. A sixth form college is an educational institution in England where students aged 16 to 19 study for advanced school-level qualifications, such as A-levels. University entrance normally requires at least 3 A-level qualifications. I study Art and Design, Information and Communication Technology, Mathematics and Russian.

In England, education is compulsory between the ages of five and sixteen. Students at a sixth form college typically study for two years and sit A-level examinations at the end of the second year.

Please tell me something about your education system and whatever else you find important to say about your education.

Yes, I enjoy doing projects at school because they allow me to be creative and study a topic I'm interested in more deeply. My favourite project was about environmental protection in my region. For this project, I did research on the internet, created a survey for my classmates, and made a presentation with my findings. Project work develops important skills such as research, critical thinking, time management, and teamwork.

One thing that Alan’s school life and mine have in common is our age; we are both 16 and in full-time education. However, there are more differences. Unlike Alan, who is in a 6th form college specializing in subjects for A-levels, I study in a general secondary school with a wider range of compulsory subjects. A key contrast between his education and mine is that he has more choice in what to study. Compared to Alan's school, my school focuses on a broad education rather than early specialization for university.
